Match Report

The 3s ground out a long awaited first victory of 2020 in a game in which they sometimes lacked quality but made up for it with their effort and determination.
Twice in the 11 years that I’ve played for SGHC, we have exceeded expectations to end a whole season on 24 points.
And on those occasions, longer serving players said they could not remember ever reaching that total.
Today’s welcome return to winning ways saw us reach that 24-point milestone with six games remaining,.
After a reasonable start today, the first half became quite a scrappy affair.
There were some stray passes, not a lot of communication and a tendency to lunge into tackles far too quickly, enabling their youngsters to skillfully sidestep and dribble round.
Neither goalkeeper broke a sweat
A situation where, collectively, South Glis didnt defend as well as they should have done enabled Cheltenham to take a 1-0 lead at half-time.
We seemed a little deflated and lacklustre during the team talk, but started the second half with more purpose, if still lacking the quality touches in the final third to cause the home side too much concern.
Ryan went close, and at least one other shot went wide.
We rode our luck in defence, toi, a Cheltenham striker just failing to connect at the back post for what, on other day, would have been tap in.
Then we raised our game and asserted some possessiknal dominance.
A short corner saw Mark Baldwin’s shot blocked but Jake was running in and slotted home the rebound.
We braced ourselves for Cheltenham to come hard from the re-start, but soon took the wind out of their sails.
A sublime sequence of four or five passes showed a teasing glimpse of the quality we are capable of.
We ramped up the pressure, won another short and Jake scored what would turn out to be the winner.
No ‘end of game’s short corner this week although Cheltenham did surge forward as the umpire indicated there were two minutes to go.
The game ended with an anxious South Glos on the defensive but this time no late drama and the 3s extended their unbeaten run to three gamesxwhile grinding out a result to reach that 24-point milestone.
