Match Report

South Glos mens 1s rushed to the pitch following England Rugby’s win. The overnight rain had quickened the pitch to suit the team’s high tempo style. The high quality of passing from the pre-game fire up carried over into the match.

The visitors were without substitutes but they did very well to press all over the pitch in the sticky heat. The South Glos back line played the ball around patiently, but with a clinical desire the keep the ball moving in order to open up passing channels and allow the forward players to rotate positionally. Parsons and Leahy kept tempo high roaming the centre of the pitch like a duo of territorial dogs. This set the platform for many goal scoring chances with the fleet of foot Humpreys often driving to the baseline to feed fellow forwards, returning from injury in fabulous form, providing for Payne to score the opener. A second was added from a short corner when an off target push out was tamely returned by the stopper to Garrett-Downes who tucked the the ball into the corner to see the home side go into the break with a two goal lead.

The side were pleased with the way the game was going and seeked more of the same in the second half. After some skirmishing the reds played the ball down the line to Gilbert who drove in field with power, creating an angle to feed the hungry Humphreys who played a one-two with Payne in the D to open up an empty goal and tap the ball over the line. Gilbert continued his provider mode in accidental fashion, flinging the ball from the top of the D at a short corner with venom into the post. The ball boomeranged behind the goalkeeper across the goal line into the kill zone of the alert Garrett-Downes who pounced first and doubled his personal tally. Four goals to the good there was certainly a feeling that the job had been done, but it will not please the side to look back on allowing the opposition to gain a foothold, earn a short corner and convert the strike.

Continual improvement is required as South Glos take a long trip to league leaders Minehead who have been as explosive as the name suggests thus far this season with 17 in just two games.
