It was a tough weekend for the red and blacks, with three sides out of five going down to defeat.
The men’s 1s continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 5-0 win over old friends Bristol and West. Although the win was a fairly routine one, the team said goodbye (for the season) to defensive lynchpin and all-round good guy Alex Puplett, who headed off to Canada knowing that in eight league games this season his side had conceded just four goals thanks to his efforts.
The ladies 1s garnered a creditable draw against rivals Westberries. The ladies started the game with no goalkeeper, but this proved no obstacle even when a penalty flick was awarded against them – club legend Leanne Birley stepping in to save the day (and the flick).
The men’s 2s dropped their first points of the campaign in the late game at Firebrands, but Monners’ men remain top of West Central 2 in spite of the 3-1 loss. The ladies 2s were frozen out 10-0 at the coldest hockey venue on earth, Norton Hill School in Mendip, while the men’s third team lost narrowly at home to Bristol and West.
